After a lot of research on renotalk, we purchased our kitchen sink from Amazon….a kraus sink. I was a little skeptical on how good the sink would be because it is actually made in China…and I really don’t wanna skimp when it comes to kitchen stuff because we spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
But after heaps of research…and reading amazon reviews…searching for an alternative sink that is reasonably priced in Singapore, I bit the bullet and ordered the sink.
It arrived super early…took less than a week for it to arrive…and can i say…it was really well packed. After inspecting the sink…i can happily say that this was a super good buy. It is deep, it is big and heaps of padding so it is quite silent. The added frills of a sink guard at the bottom…a deep drain…all added perks.
just to give you an idea of how big the sink is…here’s a picture of our ten mth old golden retriever “inspecting” the sink. LOL
My campbells tomato soup lights are here!!!
This was one of the first few items I knew I knew I definitely wanted for our new home. Regardless whether I got a kitchen counter nook or a island…this was a must for the place.
Finally found them…and took a chance ordering them. They weren’t the cheapest…and actually they are going to be the most expensive lights featured in our new home….but they are TOTALLY worth it!!!
OMG….I can’t wait to see them up at the new place! Sorry, i am really excited!
I really like these toilet roll holders for the new home…the first one is my absolute favourite…it can go to the powder room…think our guests will find it funny too… wondering if it will go with the retro theme though.
the second one will go to the common toilet upstairs…commissioning one done for ourselves in the master toilet…it will feature the mouse again…and he will be doing the leg crossed super urgent to go…holding a sign… “are we there yet?!” LOL
Visited the commune warehouse at defu lane…found this cute tree stump…. have not decided if this will be the stool at the entrance as a stool to make taking shoes on and off easier, or a petite side table for the study upstairs…good bargain of $220 before the 5% discount.
We also visited Interior Affairs…. got some great buys from their moving out sale…pity we didn’t make it there earlier cos most of the stuff has been snapped up. But I am very happy with these Blum dish organisers….I got three of them plus a Cole & Mason pepper mill and two rattan baskets (for the walk in pantry) for $125! I think that is a steal!
We also visited Tong Yuan Building which houses Egg3, whitewood and Grafunk…but the stuff was still way too pricey for us… Also checked out TaylorB…i must admit…I didn’t like their stuff….though everyone seems to be raving about them…and what’s up with the alphabet pricing!! I guess….I am in the minority when it comes to finding that shop very BLAH.
Oh before i forget… if you haven’t been to this shop called The Godown at Zion Road…check it out…they have some really cute bits and pieces…got a old keropok tin from there…plan to use it as a candle holder in the balcony and cute wooden alphabets that are made from the wood of old javanese fishing boats….they even kept the original paint work!
To save on cost, we have purchased most of our feature lights (except the campbells light) from taobao. We saved a fortune on that!!
this is gonna be our dining lights….a pair of marine pendant lights
this is a small light that we will be adding to the staircase…in addition to the big pendant light from the ceiling.
we really liked this floor lamp…so we are adding it to the study room
double vessel coffee cups
cute cushion cover
our coffee table
royal doulton (gordon ramsay range) china
glass canisters to store food stuff (will sit in our walk in pantry)
cute everyday mugs that are actually ceramic!
water glasses and rock glasses for cocktails
lovely cake stand for the cakes i bake…this can sit on the island
A friend has kindly volunteered to carry some stuff back from the US for us….had a hard time trying to keep the order low. In the end went for three items…and of course ordered the Kraus sink from Amazon. The Kraus sink has arrived…and it is fabulous!! To top it off…it is 30″ in length! Love it!
our main door faces true east…so according to fengshui…i should paint my main door brown, black or turquoise. We have decided to keep the current door…so it is going to get a fresh coat of paint…probably brown (maybe black, will see), but we are adding this door knocker (friend bring it back from US) and adding this little chipmunk as a door stopper (friend carrying this back, made of cast iron) to add the turquoise colour
To add some character to the powder room, the toilet roll holder will be this cute giraffe!! LOVE IT! At the end of the day, it is not the ID work that will make the place, but the soft furnishing added to the place that will make it HOME.
it has been a long while since i updated this blog…so here it goes…
We have collected our keys….and almost finalised our drawings for the new home. There are still some tweaks to do, but it is almost there. I will have to cut down on some of the items because it is over the initial budget which is sad…but the good news is….we managed to find a marble top for the kitchen island for under $700! So that is a great saving…very happy about that.
The dining and kitchen area….the stairs won’t look like this due to budget…which is a pity…will have to go for wrought iron to save cost…the campbells lights are coming in next week from Finland! Can’t wait.
Also ordered our dining table set from scanteak during the sale…that helped save a bundle. I really like these black and white floor tiles…but still struggling to find them in Singapore….managed to find them in JB….and they were cheap…but I don’t know how to transport them to Singapore….the tile shop doesn’t have that service…any know how i can transport tiles from JB to Singapore? is there a company that helps with that? Is it pricey?
Also changed the lights to marine looking lights….also found from taobao…saved a bundle.
The kitchen area….initially we were thinking of using butcher block for the counter top….but seeing as we do a lot of cooking…we have decided against it. The oven will also move to the side of portion of the kitchen where the gas hob is…a tall boy will be constructed to hold the oven and the microwave…. Adding a yard area to the kitchen…so that our clothes don’t smell of food during the drying process. Oh…the toilet entrance downstairs has also been changed.
Changed the downstairs toilet to a powder room, and moved the entrance to the hall so that guests don’t have to walk through the kitchen. Love the retro look! The light featured here, i managed to find from taobao…saved a bundle. Added hollow brick tiles to the top so that there is some sort of ventilation seeing as the toilet comes without a window LOVE THIS TOILET!!
The living will pretty much look like this…except the craftstone brick wall will be white….want it to look understated We are also not air-conditioning downstairs….going green…so heaps of ceiling fans to keep the place cool. We have also added a planter box…this is where we plan to grow our herbs cos we cook a lot. I have grown herbs at my new place with success…fingers crossed it remains that way.
To keep cost down…we are only doing major reno on the master bedroom. Huge of cupboard space…love!
This was the initial plan for the master toilet…but looks like we will have to say goodbye to the pretty blue tiles…cos mosiac is expensive.
Very exciting…it is coming along…final contractor quotes should be in by next week….and then we can start work! One concern though…looks like the house will only be ready right smack in the middle of hungry ghost.
I have been on a mission to keep cost low when it comes to meals in the house….part of just trying to be frugal…also to help save $ for the new home.
The aim is to cook at least five dinners for six adults…keeping the total cost under $100. I must admit, i have been quite successful. The first week, we had…
Meal #1 – Fish & Prawn Pie ($20)
Meal #2 – 40 Cloves Garlic & Chicken Pasta ($10)
Meal #3 – Udon noodle soup with Yuzu Chicken ($15)
Meal #4 – Sichuan bang bang chicken with steamed egg with prawns ($11)
Meal #5 – Three-Cup chicken, veggie and rice ($5)
Meal #6 – Butter Chicken with saffron rice and cucumber raita ($25)
Total cost of six meals for six adults – $86
Pretty good effort….the one dish i really wanted to attempt was Butter Chicken, cos it is one of my favourite Indian dishes….I used a cookbook I will be reviewing soon (Food of India) as a guide…and it turned out great! It did involve a bit of planning… I marinated the chicken overnight. The verdict of the meal? “Yummy! Gonna have seconds.” Music to any cook’s ears. 🙂
2 cm piece of ginger, grated
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup almonds meal
2/3 cup thick plain yogurt
1/2 teaspoon chilli powder
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoon garam masala
4 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
14 oz tin chopped tomatoes
1 1/4 teaspoon salt
2lb 4oz skinless boneless chicken thigh fillets, cut into large pieces
5 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
1 large onion thinly sliced
8 tbs finely chopped cilantro (coriander) leaves
4 tablespoons single cream
1) Add the ginger, garlic, almond meal, yogurt, chilli powder, cloves, cinnamon, garam masala, cardamom pods, tomato and salt into a bowl and blend together with a fork. Add the chicken pieces and stir to coat thoroughly.
2) Cover and marinate overnight in the fridge.
3) Preheat the Oven to 350 F.
4) Heat the ghee in a dutch oven, add the onion and fry until softened and brown. Add the chicken mixture and fry for 2 minutes. Mix in the fresh cilantro.
5) Pour in the cream and stir with a fork. Bake for 1 hour. If the top is browning too quickly, cover with a piece of foil.
6) Leave to rest for 10 min before serving. If oil rises to the surface, drain it.
7) Just before serving, place the dish under the broiler for abt 2 minutes to brown the top.
